Historique :
Découverte en 1750, la houille a été exploitée entre 1839 et 1869 près du Temple et de la Tabarière au sud de Chantonnay. De cette exploitation, il reste aujourd’hui deux terrils, le bureau de l’ancienne mine et des traces d’excavation. La houille (le charbon) était transportée vers les fours à chaux tout proches pour servir de combustible à la cuisson du calcaire, extrait de carrières du bassin de Chantonnay. Mines et fours à chaux appartenaient à la même société. Parmi ces fours, les Cinq Fours construits en 1848, situés à environ 1 km au nord de la mine du Temple sont bien conservés. Ils forment ainsi un ensemble sans doute unique qui fait penser à des fortifications médiévales.
