Du Moyen-Age à la Révolution française, au milieu des marais asséchés de la Sèvre et du Lay, sur une vaste plaine entrecoupée de canaux et de digues, s'élevait l'un des monastères les plus puissants du Bas-Poitou : l'Abbaye Royale de St Michel-en-l'Herm. Aujourd'hui, les bâtiments que l'on peut voir témoignent de ce glorieux passé.
