Historique :	Ce portrait de Pie IX, pape de 1846 à 1878, n'est ni signé ni daté. Il semble avoir été peint d'après une photographie - soit au cours du dernier quart du XIXe siècle, soit au cours du premier quart du XXe. Le portrait de Léon XIII (pape de 1878 à 1903), ni signé ni daté et également conservé dans le bâtiment des archives, est de mêmes dimensions, de même facture et est encadré de la même manière, ce qui laisse penser que les deux tableaux ont été commandés à la même date au même artiste.
